ResumoAt least three Earth resource satellites carrying synthetic aperture radar (SAR)imaging systems will be launched in the 1990's, starting with the European Space Agency's ERS-1. Including two anticipated Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-C)flights, four of these five systems include C-band. (One satellite will be at L-band, and SIR-C includes L- and X-band). In the last half of the decade, RADARSAT is expected to provide operational data for up to five years and in variety of modes from high resolution (50 Km swath)to ScanSAR (500 Km)swath. Since radar frequencies penetrate cloud, mist and smoke, these systems should be useful for Amazonian observations. These are at least two challenges to be met. First there are virtually no published results of observation of tropical forest using C-band radar. In response, planning is under way for Canadian airborne SAR missions to Amazonia through cooperative investigations. Second, the sheer size of the region of interest implies a large radar data processing task. Brazil is interested in being able to process data fron SAR satellite sufficiently, rapidly and large enough volume to be able to put the information derived to work in resource management decesions. On the other hand, with national responsibility for RADARSAT, Canada needs experience in tropical forest radar observations. Industry and government would be involved in any international effort to put these two complementary interests together. Technology transfer issues need consideration, both with respect to intellectual content and with respect to governmental regulation.
